The Greater Good

A 8 track soul jazz album () — released March 30th 2009 on Jazz Services

GILLES PETERSON'S WORLDWIDE AWARDS - JAZZ ALBUM OF THE YEAR 2009 Robert Mitchell 3io has its roots in its leader's long-running band, Panacea. Drummer Richard Spaven and bassist Tom Mason are the rhythm section of Panacea and, together with Robert, have quietly been developing a real signature in this traditional jazz piano trio format. Over the years the trio has honed its mix of influences (song, broken beat, hip-hop, odd metre, freeform jazz) with older and more modern jazz/electronica/rock. The Greater Good features arrangements of tunes by Massive Attack (Teardrop), and the famously sampled Galt MacDermot (composer of Hair), along with five Mitchell originals, a tune each by Tom and Richard, and the rarely played Dance Cadaverous, written by Wayne Shorter for his 1964 album Speak No Evil. Robert Mitchell has forged a formidable reputation as a gifted pianist and composer. As part of the prestigious F-ire Collective, Robert won the Jazz on 3 Innovation Award at the 2004 BBC Jazz Awards; he has also been nominated twice: for Rising Star in 2002, and Best New Work in 2003. He's played/recorded with names such as Norma Winstone, Steve Coleman, Courtney Pine, Steve Williamson, Ty, 2 Banks of 4, and IG Culture, in addition to leading the six-piece Panacea. Richard Spaven is prolific on the nu-jazz and broken beat scene in the UK, US and Netherlands, playing with Jose James, Guru's Jazzmatazz, Kaidi Tatham, Mark de Clive-Lowe, 4 Hero, Flowriders, Bugz in the Attic, Platinum Pied Pipers and DJ Vadim's One Self and is musical director for UK rapper TY. Tom Mason has worked with an eclectic array of artists including Athena, Robin Eubanks, Michael Cain, Gwilym Simcock, Gerard Presencer, Famadou Don Moye, BBC Big Band, Kings Cross Hotclub, Nicolas Meier Group, Carl Orr, Tim Garland, Timeline, Donovan and DJ Stix.
